A Naval Academy spokesman says the future of Rapids draft pick Joe Greenspan is still up in the air, despite a report the defender has been cleared to play in MLS for the remainder of the 2015 season.
“Right now this is still to be determined,” Cmdr. John Schofield, a U.S. Naval Academy public affairs spokesman, told the Denver Post in an e-mail on Tuesday. “It is important for the process to play out with fairness to Midn. Greenspan’s commitment.”
A said Greenspan was cleared to play for the Rapids this season and assigned to a Denver recruiting office, and quoted Greenspan discussing the arrangement.
“Itap great that I’ll be able to wear two uniforms, the Navy and the Rapids, and pursue two careers that have been a dream of mine,” . “I’m so grateful to the Navy for giving me this chance and to the Rapids for being willing to work with me given my (military) commitment.”
According to the report, Greenspan would train with the Rapids through the 2015 season and then once the season concludes.

“Nothing has changed with respect to Joe Greenspan’s status with the Colorado Rapids,” team spokesman Richard Clarke told The Denver Post on Monday.
The Rapids have 28 players on their current roster which is the maximum allowed under the 2015 Rules and Regulations. Should the Rapids try to add any player, the club would need to open up a roster spot first.
Greenspan was drafted in the second round (No. 26 overall) by Colorado in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, and was projected much higher had the All-American not had a five-year post-graduation service commitment. The 6-foot-6 defender has trained with the Rapids during breaks in his school. He is set to graduate this Friday, May 22.
