Comcast will unleash its 2-gigabit-per-second Internet service to most Colorado customers this summer, the company is expected to announce on Thursday.

Until then, you’ll need to be content with the new 250 mbps, which becomes available today for $150 a month.

Comcast won’t share prices for 2 gpbs, which it calls Gigabit Pro, until the service is available. But one site, price tag online for the Gigabit Pro service before Comcast pulled the pages. In the Denver area on Wednesday, Comcast offered a top speed of 150 mbps for $115 a month.

Unlike the competition, Comcast says that it will roll out service to Colorado customers almost all at once. The Denver metro area, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Loveland and Longmont will be included in the summer launch. Additional cities in the mountains and southern Colorado will launch “in the future,” said Cindy Parsons, a Comcast spokesperson.

“When we offer Internet service, our approach is not to serve a single neighborhood, but instead an entire city or service area. In Colorado, we’ll quickly make 2-gig speeds available to nearly one million people. We are able to scale this really quickly,” Parsons said.

Comcast in April, followed by California, Chattanooga, Chicago, Florida and Nashville. On Thursday, the company is also expected to announce Washington, Utah and Houston.

Such speeds surely have geeks drooling but it will likely be overkill for most consumers. Typical broadband users get between 10 to 20 mbps. The Gigabit Pro speeds are 100 to 200 times faster.

In Colorado, gigabit is slowly rolling out. On Monday, CenturyLink added Aurora, Fort Collins and Boulder to its batch of cities getting gigabit service. But the service is limited to business customers. CenturyLink residential customers in and Colorado Springs neighborhoods can order gigabit service.

Others, like Rise Broadband and the city of Longmont, also offer gigabit in Colorado. Read my most recent gigabit update: .
