GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A gate is being installed at the Hanging Lake rest area to help stem overcrowding and parking issues that have plagued the popular trailhead off of Interstate 70 about 9 miles east of Glenwood Springs.
The Post Independent of Glenwood Springs reports (http://bit.ly/1eey32V ) that about 131,000 people a year hike the 1.2-mile trail to the small turquoise lake, almost all of them between May and September.
More than 200 people a day have been turned away from the trail. Many vehicles often idle waiting for parking spots, and some have parked on the exit ramp and even on the interstate, creating hazards.
The Colorado Department of Transportation will install a gate Thursday that will show when the parking area is full, directing traffic elsewhere.
