BOULDER — Thousands of the rubber ducks that were poured into Boulder Creek for the 28th annual EXPAND Duck Race on Monday remained on the loose Tuesday after fast-moving waters made it difficult for crews to catch them all as they floated down the creek.
“We had a great duck escape,” said Alison Rhodes, district services manager with Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department.
Rhodes said that in past years, volunteers would wade into Boulder Creek at the finish line and set up a tarp-and-net system that caught the rubber ducks as they made their way downstream.
But recent rains and the changing of Boulder Creek after the 2013 floods meant the creek was running a lot faster and deeper this year.
