Quick container helpers
Containers are how a lot of soggy Colorado gardens have remained looking good this year. But the most beautiful pots often come with a single, inadequate drainage hole. Sure, you can use gravel, pot shards or even packing peanuts, but then there’s the chore of picking them out of the soil at the end of the season. Drain Smart discs were created to solve both problems. Put these fabric and nylon mesh discs in the bottom of a pot, and, presto: Instant better drainage, plus easier cleanup in fall. More soil stays in, more water goes through. In 3-packs (12-inch diameter) for about $20, or 5-packs (6-inch) for about $16; find dealers at .
Hidden boost for pots
Now that your containers are draining well, keep them from staining cement or decks by giving them little hidden feet. Potrisers, little black blocks of recycled vulcanized rubber, discourage insects that love to hide under pots (including earwigs). Use three or four under small or large pots or statuary or stack them to level pots on slopes. They’ve got a lifetime guarantee not to break down or leave marks. In packs of 16 to 80 in various sizes, about $20-$80. Susan Clotfelter, The Denver Post
