A staff member at the Denver Center for International Studies at Ford Elementary School was arrested for possession of a controlled substance Thursday morning after she was found unconscious in the school’s bathroom.

Denver police responded to the school, at 14500 Maxwell Place, around 11:30 a.m., officials said.

The staff member was found passed out in the bathroom by four first-grade girls. The students thought the staff member was sleeping, according to an e-mail from the school sent to parents Thursday.

Officials said the unresponsive woman was taken to a hospital for further evaluation. As a result of the condition she was found in, she was arrested and is being investigated for possession of an unknown controlled substance.

The school has not released the staff member’s name or said whether she is a teacher at the school. She has been placed on administrative leave.

School officials said they are not going to provide any further details because of the ongoing investigation.

“As a result of this incident, the staff member is currently under investigation for drug-related offenses on school property,” DCIS principal Ginger Conroy said in the message to parents.

“Please know that the safety and well-being of our students is our priority. The school counselor talked with the students involved in this incident and is available to talk with other students if they are troubled by this incident.”
