Interview with Kerry Workman, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: Gardening was a passion of mine that slowly took over my life. When I retired from my corporate project management job, I pursued my passion wholeheartedly. I worked at two local garden centers over the past several years, and provided personal gardening services. I also studied landscape design and nursery certification. The learning is ongoing, which I love.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: I opened my shop to serve a market that I feel is not met in my community. There are big-box stores selling plants, and there are large industrial strength garden centers, some of which are very expensive. I want to be able to spend time with my customers and help them create beautiful containers and spaces. I also believe it is important that all the plants I carry are grown in Colorado, and I’m committed to selling organic herb and vegetable plants.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: I’d rather do anything outside, than anything inside. I am fortunate that I live in Colorado and love our sunshine (the last two weeks notwithstanding). I am also creative — and messy — and I think gardening and garden design is a natural fit. Take all that and share it with people, and I’m in my element.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Right now, it’s letting the community know I’m here. And, of course, it’s difficult to decide what inventory to carry with so many plant choices out there. Since I am a small business and can’t carry everything, I offer my customers the ability to special order their requests without any surcharge.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I’m really a very lazy gardener! I know which plants do not require a lot of extra care. A beautiful garden doesn’t have to be all about hard work. It should be about enjoyment.
