Re: “Why manhole covers sit so low,” May 30 letter to the editor.

I think letter-writer Kenneth Robbins’ assessment of manhole cover placement could be questionable. In Aurora, the covers are at grade level and I suspect they get as much snow as does Denver. Is the Colorado Department of Transportation requirement in Aurora different than in Denver? In Salt Lake City the covers are also at grade level and I’m sure they receive lots of snow that requires plowing.

I have four years’ experience plowing snow and have plowed over many manhole covers that were positioned at grade level, and I had no problems with the plow blades catching on the covers.

East 14th Avenue in Denver was recently repaved and many of the covers are 2 inches or more below grade. This is the type of situation that the original letter-writer may have been referring to. I suspect the issue could be one of maintenance work quality, as opposed to CDOT requirements.
