Even without a new permanent head coach, the Nuggets continue to work out prospects for the NBA draft. And the group coming in Friday is full of first-round talent.

The headliners are Arizona small forward Stanley Johnson, Wisconsin small forward Sam Dekker and Notre Dame point guard Jerian Grant.

There will be seven participants in all, including Virginia forward Darion Atkins, Kentucky guard Devin Booker, Charlotte guard Pierria Henry and St. John’s swingman Sir’Dominic Pointer.

Grant could be drafted high in the first round. Johnson projects as a late lottery pick. Dekker is just outside of that range, but he could move up depending on his workouts.

Nuggets staff members Patrick Mutombo, Noel Gillespie, John Beckett and Corsley Edwards, among others, will work out the players while the team continues to sort out candidates for its still vacant head coaching position.

According to ESPN, the Nuggets have interviewed former Sacramento Kings coach Mike Malone.

Malone was on the Nuggets’ original list of candidates and joins Mike D’Antoni and interim coach Melvin Hunt as the candidates known to have interviewed for the job.

The Nuggets have said they would like to have a head coach hired before the June 25 draft.
