AURORA — Police say an armed man was shot and seriously wounded in Aurora early Monday by one of two state parole officers who were inspecting an apartment on the city’s western edge.

The man who was shot was not on parole, investigators say, and was not the man the officers were trying to contact.

Officials say the shooting happened just before 8 a.m. at the Monte Vista Apartments in the 2000 block of Emporia Street. Police say the parole officers, who work for the state’s Department of Corrections, were not injured.

Sgt. Chris Amsler, a spokesman for Aurora police, said the armed man did not fire at the officers. Amsler said one shot was fired.

The man was transported to University of Colorado Hospital for surgery. Police did not release his name.

Police will submit their findings to Adams County prosecutors.
