Denver police are making a commendable effort to strike the right balance between an aggressive zero-tolerance campaign against gang violence that soared early this year and not harassing the innocent.
“We don’t want to be a heavy-handed police state in this part of the city,” Deputy Chief David Quinones said recently, referring to neighborhoods in northeast Denver.
As reported, the crackdown can be measured in fairly impressive statistics involving arrests and confiscated guns.
Thankfully, the violence, which resulted in 12 gang-related homicides so far this year, has decreased since late April.
However, an arrest has been made in only one of the 12 homicides.
So even if the violence remains under control, there is still a lot of police work to do.
