The driver of a dump truck was cited for careless driving causing injury Monday when he allegedly sideswiped a bicyclist and knocked her into an embankment along Snowmass Creek Road, according to a report by the Colorado State Patrol.

The truck driver, Jace Christopher, 38, of Rifle, was northbound roughly one-half mile from Highway 82, the report said. He passed one cyclist also heading north and was in the process of passing a second cyclist when he encountered oncoming traffic, according to the report.

“He swerved back on to the right, hoping to miss the bicyclist and sideswiped her,” said Sgt. Dave Evridge of the Colorado State Patrol.

The cyclist, Betsy Fifield, 60, of Aspen, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to the report. Fifield was knocked off her bike into an embankment along the road, according to Trooper Nate Reid of the State Patrol’s public information office. The accident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. Monday.
