Marcia Neal, chairwoman of the state Board of Education, made a number of trenchant points in a resignation letter Friday regarding the inexplicable behavior of some colleagues since last fall’s election.
The board has charged half-cocked into issues over which it has little or no authority — at one point suggesting it could grant waivers to state assessments, for example — wasting its time and sowing confusion in the process.
“Also,” Neal notes, “the board spent hours debating the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, only to find that we had very limited authority over the survey.” Worse, the board refused to set “cut scores” for social studies tests, undercutting their usefulness.
Neal says she is quitting in part because she suffered a fall in February and has been slow to heal. We hope the Republican vacancy committee in her district chooses someone with similar good sense.
