A 22-year-old Avon man was sentenced Monday to two years in prison for driving drunk in a crash last year that left a woman riding in his car dead.
Hugo Castillo-Marquez was also sentenced to serve two years of probation for driving under the influence, to be served after his prison term. He also agreed to pay about $9,000 in restitution to a victim’s compensation program.
Eagle County prosecutors announced the sentence in a news release Thursday.
Castillo-Marquez was driving drunk in August 2014 when he failed to make a turn at a hairpin corner. The vehicle hit and ran straight through a guardrail then went airborne, the release said. Authorities estimated the vehicle was traveling about 70 mph.
Officials say Castillo-Marquez called 911 and when first responders arrived on scene, his passenger, 23-year-old , was pronounced dead.
Prosecutors say Castillo-Marquez was driving with a blood-alcohol level just under twice the legal limit at the time of the wreck.
Castillo-Marquez pleaded guilty in April to driving under the influence and vehicular homicide, court records show.
