A 2-year-old boy was ejected from his father’s vehicle and the child’s 5-year-old cousin was seriously injured in a collision in Aurora Saturday afternoon.

Aurora Police said a Jeep Cherokee driven by Geraldo Estrada, 29, ran a red light at the intersection of East 17th Place and the Interstate 225 off ramp and was hit broadside by a Ford F-150 truck.

The toddler, who police say was not properly restrained in the Jeep, was ejected from the vehicle. The 5-year-old had to be extricated from the wreckage by Aurora firefighters.

Both children were transported to a hospital and were in critical condition Saturday afternoon. Estrada was treated at a hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the Ford was treated at the scene and released.

Estrada reportedly told police that he should not have been driving because his license is revoked as a habitual traffic offender. Police said in a statement that they do not believe he was impaired by drugs or alcohol.

The collision still is being investigated, but Aurora police said that charges against Estrada may include careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury, child abuse and driving while license revoked.
