The White House this week finally removed a long-standing barrier to marijuana research called the Public Health Service Review.
The review forced governmental examinations of every application for medical marijuana research, a cumbersome bureaucratic obstacle that slowed research.
The review, instituted under the Clinton administration, effectively made studying health effects of marijuana more difficult than any other Schedule 1 drug, including cocaine and heroin.
The feds should go further and eliminate the restriction that permits only one facility in the country to grow marijuana for research. Lifting government restrictions will help us better understand pot’s therapeutic benefits as well as possible adverse effects.
