Re: “Guns and the Charleston church shooting ,” June 23 letters to the editor.

Letter-writer Carla J. Wilson misquoted President Obama as saying that mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. President Obama actually and accurately said that shootings such as the one in Charleston do not occur with the frequency that they occur in the United States.

It took a horrible incident to intensify the call for the removal of the Confederate flag in South Carolina. One would think that there have already been enough awful incidents that would have resulted in the implementation of gun-control measures. How horrible does something have to be before public opinion forces the adoption of gun-control policies?
