Interview with Jack Riggi, owner and instructor

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: My family decided to pursue something we love and founded a company designed to provide safe climbing education and principles, as well as promoting a “leave no trace” ethic in outdoor adventures.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Evergreen Wilderness Guides is an instructional company. We are focused on teaching rock climbing at various levels, with an emphasis on educating our clients to experience their own adventures and move beyond needing an instructor or guide. We also have a strong focus on environmental ethics and on leaving no trace after climbing activities.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Climbing and teaching people safe practices, since the sport has evolved so much in the 20-plus years I have been climbing.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: We live in Colorado and the home of many great climbing locations. There are several Front Range companies and it is hard to compete and make any profit. It is a labor of love. Plus, we appreciate being Evergreen’s only rock climbing school, snowshoe and mountain biking guides.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: We are a family-owned small business and support the local Evergreen community. We are professionally trained and certified by the AMGA and focus on client education beyond just “going climbing.” We have many years of experience and training, and are insured and permitted in all adventures areas.
