Interview with Rick Typher, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I love fly fishing and have always wanted to have my own business, so I opened a fly shop.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Between the three employees, there is more than 100 years of experience. We are not only experts in trout fishing — we are extremely knowledgeable in salt water fly fishing. We have fly fished for stealhead, bass, salmon, carp and wipers. The fly shop is fully stocked with almost everything a fly fisherman or fly tier needs. We offer fly fishing schools for the beginner or somebody that would like to improve on their skills. We also offer fly tying classes.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I like working with the customers the most. Fly fishing is a specialized sport, so everyone who comes through the door has a different question.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The biggest challenge is the Internet. People might be surprised because of the big box stores, but our prices are the same on most products because of fixed pricing from the manufactures. So our knowledge and customer service is so important.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: That we have been in business for almost 20 years. The relationships we have made is something I was surprised about.
