“I don’t feel like I’m snake bit or anything like that, just unfortunate.”
Those were the words of right-hander Jordan Lyles on Monday when word came down that he will go on the 15-day disabled list with what the team is calling “a badly sprained left big toe.”
Lyles will see a foot specialist on Tuesday to see if his toe injury will heal on its own, or if surgery is needed to repair a torn toe ligament.
“If I have to have surgery, I don’t know how long I will be out,” said Lyles, who is 2-5 with a 5.14 ERA in 10 starts.
Taking Lyles’ place on the Rockies’ 25-man roster is right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle, who was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque. Kahnle was 1-2 with a 3.68 ERA in 17 appearances at Triple-A.
“With a 10-game homestand and a doubleheader coming up tomorrow, we felt like we needed another arm in the bullpen,” manager Walt Weiss said. “We will probably ease Tommy in, but he showed last year that he was pretty versatile. He went multiple innings at times. He pitched late in games at times, to try and preserve leads. He pretty much did it all.”
Lyles’ misfortune includes against Arizona. That injury ended up costing him 54 games.
On Sunday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Lyles left a game early because of injury for the third time in his last four starts. It was clear at that point that the injury was not going away, no matter how Rockies trainers taped up his big toe.
In other news, the Rockies will call up right-hander David Hale to pitch one of the two games in Tuesday’s doubleheader with the Dodgers. Hale will be the allowed 26th man on the roster for the doubleheader. Lefty Jorge De La Rosa, hoping the cut on his middle left finger is healed, will pitch the other game. Weiss was not ready to announce which pitcher will start Game 1 and which pitcher will start Game 2.
