Will Denver Broncos offensive guard Ben Garland be a starter come the beginning of the season?
Denver Broncos beat writer Troy Renck says yes.
”Had they stayed in the previous offensive scheme I’d say no,” Renck said. “But this new scheme with the zone blocking, they’ll need mobile guys who can get to the next level, who think quickly. Combo block. It fits his profile and how his mind works, it fits him physically.”
Renck said Garland is still raw but he’s got a great work ethic.
“I’ve talked to people that have worked with him,” he said. “Nobody works harder. He’s the first guy in and last guy out and every other cliché imaginable in terms of character and work ethic. In this new scheme I do think he’s going to start.”
The Broncos signed Garland after he went undrafted out of the Air Force in the 2010 NFL Draft. He made his NFL debut last November against the Oakland Raiders.
“Well, whether he’s able to keep the job that’s another question,” Renck said
“Ty Sambrailo, outside of a terrible camp, will be a season opening starter at left tackle,” Renck said. Sambrailo was the Broncos second round pick in the 2015 draft.
“So you’ll have two guys on the left side that have never started a game in the NFL,” Paige said. “One a rookie and one who is basically a rookie because he was suited up once or twice last year.”
“Peyton Manning is sack proof so it’s different,” Renck said. “He just cant get hit though. He’s not going to get sacked a bunch, that’s a misnomer but if he’s getting hit around his knees and ankles he’s not going to make it through the season.”
