Re: “Moment of truth for medical marijuana,” June 29 editorial.

A sign hangs on the wall of a medical marijuana shop in Berthoud. (AAron Ontiveroz, The Denver Post)

The Postap editorial on the medicinal efficacy of marijuana misses the mark. You state, “Medical marijuana proponents argue the results don’t tell the whole story because of federal barriers to legitimate research. That may be true.” Actually, that is true and is the main obstacle to the level of research necessary to prove or disprove whether marijuana is effective or not for various medical disorders.

You further state that “medical pot should be able to prove its efficacy through the same research methods as every other medicine.” At this point, that is not possible due to these same federal restrictions.

The editorial would have been on the mark if you had called for the removal of these restrictions rather than question the inadequacy of current research.
