A man is being rescued from Snowmass Mountain after a boulder tumbled down a slope during a mudslide and struck him in the chest, authorities say.

The name of the victim has not been released.

A hiker called authorities from his cellular phone after he discovered the man beside the trail with a chest injury, said Tiffani Delaney, spokeswoman for the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was in a lot of pain, but he was conscious and breathing, Delaney said.

A helicopter and a ground crew have been called for the rescue on the mountain south of the Snowmass ski resort near Aspen, Delaney said.

“He’s slowly starting to walk down the mountain toward Snowmass Lake,” she said.
