The Denver Zoo said Thursday that Castor, the offspring of a gift to former President George H.W. Bush, and one of the 10 oldest Komodo dragons in North American zoos, was euthanized following complications with arthritis.
Zoo officials said the 21-year-old Castor had exhibited a decline in the mobility of his back legs for six years. The zoo’s staff used physical therapy, pain medication and even acupuncture to try to improve his health.
Castor was born Feb. 2, 1994, at the Cincinnati Zoo and arrived in Denver in July of that year. He was an offspring of Naga, a Komodo dragon given to Bush as a gift from the president of Indonesia.
He sired two clutches of his own.
