The Denver Zoo said Thursday that Castor, the offspring of a gift to former President George H.W. Bush, and one of the 10 oldest Komodo dragons in North American zoos, was euthanized following complications with arthritis.

Zoo officials said the 21-year-old Castor had exhibited a decline in the mobility of his back legs for six years. The zoo’s staff used physical therapy, pain medication and even acupuncture to try to improve his health.
