Montrose County authorities on Wednesday arrested a 55-year-old man on suspicion of shooting a dog twice in the head and cutting its throat.

Howard Mike Kelly of Olathe is suspected of animal cruelty, a Class 6 felony.

The county sheriff’s office says the dog, named Flex, was wounded on Saturday in the area of the 2000 block of 6000 Road. Flex’s owner reported the alleged abuse Tuesday.

“(Kelly) was apprehended through good, old-fashioned police work,” the sheriff’s office . “Deputies were questioning anyone nearby that may have been involved.”

Officials say Flex is alive and at home recovering with his owners following surgery.
