A 55-year-old woman entered a not guilty plea Friday in Denver County court on a misdemeanor charge of “wrongs to children” after she allegedly left her granddaughter at Civic Center after a fireworks show last week.

Brenda Littlespottedhorse entered a not guilty plea through her public defender.

Judge Kerry Hada set bail at $6,000.

Wearing yellow-and-white striped jail clothes, Littlespottedhorse addressed only Hada with two words in a barely audible voice: “Good afternoon.”

She is accused of leaving her granddaughter in Civic Center on July 3 after the city’s fireworks show. Thursday morning in Lakewood on a probation violation warrant out of South Dakota, according to Lakewood police.

Denver investigators say no one contacted them searching for the girl after she was found in a stroller at Civic Center at about 10 p.m. It took 24 hours for police to find her family.

Police say Littlespottedhorse was supposed to be watching the child. The girl, described as 2 to 3 years old, was turned over to the custody of Denver’s Department of Human Services.

Investigators posted the girl’s photo on their Twitter account several times as part of their attempts to reach relatives. Police say the girl’s mother, who left the toddler in Littlespottedhorse’s care, was located out of state Saturday.

While it is not unusual for a child to become separated from a parent or babysitter, police say it is unusual for no one to contact them looking for a missing child.
