Getting your player ready...

Well, that was a quick change of heart.

On Thursday, Katherine Archuleta insisted she would be staying on as director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. On Friday, Archuleta — who has extensive links to Denver — announced she would be stepping down.

And no wonder: A scandal that began last month with the revelation that personnel files of 4.2 million current and former federal employees breached by computer hackers had ballooned into news that sensitive information involving more than 20 million people had actually been filched.

That may not directly be Archuleta’s fault, but somebody clearly hasn’t been minding the store.

As the list of corporate and government victims of cyber thieves lengthens, it becomes clear that even high-level cybersecurity is still a work in progress. And that’s an alarming reality in our increasingly Internet-dependent age.
