Citizens rally last October against three Jeffco school board members. (Denver Post file)
Re: “Jeffco campaign a misuse of recall,” July 1 editorial.
Letap be clear: the Jeffco school board recall is about replacing one extreme political agenda with another. The Post editorial board is correct in pointing out that this should be settled in a regular election, with real candidates on all sides and in the middle. It should not be settled in a highly polarized recall with a potentially low and skewed turnout.
I don’t disagree that the current majority’s agenda has had its moments of offensiveness and goofiness. But they’ve also — rightly — supported equitable treatment of charter schools, which under state law are just as public as neighborhood schools are. Equity is something the current board minority and their supporters have opposed and will no doubt try to roll back if given a chance.
I suspect there’s more the proponents aren’t telling us. And unlike a bona fide candidate, the recall proponents aren’t answerable about what they really want, apart from simply unseating the majority. I’m uncomfortable with that and oppose the recall.
