Microsoft Corp. is getting ready to release its Windows 10 operating system to customers on July 29, but it won’t be available pre-installed on computers that day as has been the practice with previous Windows releases.

For customers desiring a new PC with Windows 10, Microsoft is setting up stations in its stores and at other retailers to help install the operating system, said Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of Windows and device marketing. The operating system, which most customers will get as a download for existing machines, isn’t totally complete yet, and so the final version hasn’t been given to PC makers.

“You will see computers running with Windows 10 installed very soon after the 29th and then in the fall a whole new class of machines for the holidays,” he said.

Windows 10 will also be available as a free upgrade for a limited time for anyone whose devices use Windows 8/8.1 or 7, Microsoft said.
