Getting your player ready...

Some teens and tweens don’t care what their bedrooms look like. Some really, really do. And if you’re the parent of one, you know the push-me-pull-you arguments that result.

Give that child, or even a college student confronted with a drab dorm room, “DIY Bedroom Decor: 50 Awesome Ideas for Your Room” by Tana Smith (Adams, 2015).

The book’s chapters have projects from wall art (and how to hang it) to bedside baubles, lampshades and desk decor and decorations for the holidays. Each inexpensive project is detailed in clear step-by-step instructions. Yes, they’re all pretty girly, but if you played your cards right, you could work these for sons, especially the antler racks and letter bookends.

If you have a style rebel in the house, this could be the book over which you put your heads together and have actual calm, happy conversations. (Your teenage mileage may vary.) — Susan Clotfelter, The Denver Post
