Evolution Digital develops technology for set-top boxes like the ClearQAM DTA 100 percent Digital box.
In its ongoing quest to help cable operators save money, Centennial’s said Monday it for an undisclosed price.
The two companies build technology to help cable and other pay-TV providers offer the new over-the-top (OTT) streaming video services to consumers. Customers include Comcast, Cox Communications, Mediacom, WoW, Midcontinent, Izzi (Televisa-owned Cable operator in Mexico), and Cable and Wireless in the Caribbean.
With the acquisition, Evolution now has technology focused on moving Internet-based content to set-top boxes and connected devices — plus about 30 software engineers.
“This acquisition marks the next step in Evolution’s on-going strategy to develop creative and cost-effective solutions for cable operators,” Chris Egan, Evolution’s CEO, said in a statement. Egan previously co-founded Evolution Broadband, which was in 2010.
I-Velozity’s 35 employees who are mostly in India join Evolution’s team of 36. No staff or regional changes are expected.
“We are in a very fast growth phase of our company, so there will be no changes to our current staffing post acquisition. If anything, we expect further increase in staffing for our Denver headquarters,” said Brent Smith, Evolution’s president and chief technical officer.
I-Velozity makes a Subscriber Management System that offers billing, customer-relations management, fulfillment and trouble ticketing.
Evolution’s digital-to-analog converter specifically helps companies convert digital channels back to analog so older TV sets can get the channels. But it also helps companies better use radio spectrum to offer more HD channels and increase broadband speeds. The company has sold 8 million of these units to operators in the US and Mexico.
“Roughly speaking, our ‘digital to analog converter’ set-top is 70 percent less expensive than a typical cable set-top, and our new next generation ‘Hybrid IP’ set-top is 40 percent less expensive than a typical cable set-top,” Smith said.
