Jefferson County authorities arrested a 35-year-old homeless man Sunday after they say he broke into a home in the Ken Caryl Valley area while armed with a knife the day before.

Steven Minchey is being held on suspicion of first-degree burglary and felony menacing in the Saturday break-in, the county sheriff’s office says.

“A man came home and surprised (Minchey) in his home on Willowleaf Drive,” the sheriff’s office said. “The burglar was armed with a knife and fled the scene. Thankfully, the resident was not injured.”

Deputies were unable to find Minchey immediately after the break-in, but about 9 a.m. Sunday residents from the area called to report a suspicious person who fit Minchey’s description.

Deputies found Minchey and officials say they were able to link him to the burglary.

“Minchey is homeless and was camping nearby,” the sheriff’s office said.
