Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt (R-Colorado Springs). (RJ Sangosti, Denver Post file)
Re: “GOP condemns Klingenschmitt’s comments about gay Boy Scout leaders” July 29 news story.
The Colorado Republican Party issued a statement last week excoriating Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt for exercising his free speech: “We strongly condemn [his] highly offensive comments. As we’ve said in the past, Gordon does not speak on behalf of the party, nor do his words reflect our party’s values.”
Is Klingenschmitt not entitled to express his religious convictions regarding what he believes to be a shameful decision on the part of the Boy Scouts of America to repeal the organization’s century-old ban on homosexuality?
If Klingenschmittap Bible quotations do not reflect the values of the party, then what are its values? If the Colorado GOP neither accepts the quotations, nor believes them to be true, that is one thing; it is quite another to issue a public statement humiliating the Colorado Republican for expressing his personal views on homosexuality.
