The offers all manner of goods from the field through the summer, but come Aug. 11 it will serve up a once-a-year treat: its annual Iron Chef Challenge featuring two local chefs.

This is year five for the event, and the set-up is a simple one.

At 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Steven Yacoveta, sous chef at the Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield will defend the resort’s 2014 title against chef Scott Yosten, owner of The Butler Did It Fine Food and Catering.

Each chef will be handed $60 in market chits and given 40 minutes to buy ingredients from vendors. At 5:20 p.m., they will hit their outdoor cooking stations to prepare and appetizer and main course for a judging panel. Samples of their creations will also be available to spectators at the free event.

“It’s exciting,” said Dave Carter, one of the volunteer market managers. “The first year we were operating one of our produce vendors suggested we do it. We started the next year and it’s been a big hit.”

Like the contest, the Broomfield Farmers’ Market has grown. More than 40 vendors are on the site each Tuesday at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Broomfield. Carter said about 1,200 patrons shop the market at the height of produce season.

Among the products the chefs will be able to choose from are locally-raised meats, poultry, produce, pasta, honey, cheeses and baked goods from area farms, ranches and other purveyors.

“Our farmers bring their best to Broomfield , so chef Yocevetta and chef Yosten will have a cornucopia of ingredients available,” Carter said.

The competition is modeled after the popular where celebrity chefs vie for top-toque honors.

The Broomfield Farmers’ Market is at 1700 W. 10th Ave. in Broomfield. It is open Tuesdays from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. from June 9 until Sept. 29.
