Three horses were hit by a truck Saturday night on U.S. 285 in Chaffee County, officials said.

One horse was killed, said Trooper Josh Lewis, a Colorado State Patrol spokesman.

Around 11:15 p.m., a Ford truck hit the horses, Lewis said.

Lewis said he did not know the condition of the other two horses or how they got onto the road.

No one in the truck was injured, he said.

The Heart of the Rockies Roping Association, an organization in Poncha Springs, posted on its Facebook page that the horses belonged to members of the roping club.

The post said that horses “got out” and were “struck on the highway.”

to help raise money for the family that owned the horses. “Losing that many horses at once is not only emotionally devastating but financially as well. Keep them in your thoughts today,” the post said.

The family was not immediately available for comment.
