A Westminster police officer fired a bullet at an armed felony menacing suspect on Monday morning near a park and missed, officials say.

The suspect, a man, was later arrested after police flooded the area around Nottingham Park, according to a news release.

Police were called about 11:30 a.m. to the park on reports the suspect had a handgun and had threatened a man.

“Officers arrived in the area and began looking for the suspect,” the release said. “One officer located the suspect in an open area near Nottingham Park. When the suspect pulled a handgun out of his waistband, the officer fired one round. The suspect was not hit.”

Police say the suspect ran from the officer after being fired upon.

Police say they created a perimeter and notified area residents, including schools and churches, of the danger.

“After saturating the area with several officers and detectives from the Westminster and Arvada police departments, the suspect was located and taken into custody without incident,” the release said.

Police did not release the suspect’s name.

“There were no injuries to the suspect, citizens or officers during this incident,” according to the release. “The investigation is ongoing. Charges will be determined when the investigation is complete.”
