Interview with Rebecca Tischler, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I am a designer and artist, same as my parents. My dad is a ceramicist who just retired from teaching at the University of Denver for more than 40 years, and my mother is a jeweler and one of the founding members of the Boulder Arts and Crafts Cooperative. I moved to New York to go to the Fashion Institute of Technology and when I came back to Denver three years later, I was pleasantly surprised by all of the cool new businesses that had popped up. I think we all really wanted to be a part of making Denver a cool place and home for artists, so we decided the best way to do that is to open a shop to introduce people to all the wonderful artists we know.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: I think our range of products certainly sets us apart. We definitely don’t want to be too high end for people, but we do also want to have one-of-a-kind pieces that a person can resonate with and invest in. We also do “Second Saturday” openings to give people the chance to meet the artist. We really want to engage in the community through these events. We see these events and the store in general, as a way to introduce people to wonderful handcrafted things and the people behind them.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: I love finding new things. Whenever I’m traveling or at a local craft fair, I always have a notepad to write down names of new artists or new card lines. Card shopping is my favorite and I think you can see that in the shop. We’ve got a great card selection. I also love telling people the stories behind the work.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Marketing is a big challenge for us. So far we have grown organically through word of mouth. We’re pretty good with social media and newsletters, but there’s always room for more exposure. Going online will be our next challenge!

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: We are a family business. Both my parents’ work and mine can be found in the shop, as well as vintage goods from my other sister. The shop is owned by my sister, my mom and myself, but we have a bigger family than that, so everyone helps out when they can.
