It was as hot Saturday as it’s ever been in Denver on that date. The city tied a record set in 1960 for a high temperature of 98 degrees.

Temperatures at Denver International Airport topped out at 98 degrees in the late afternoon, the highest in 55 years for that day.

But relief is on the way as a front containing cooler air drops into Colorado, bringing clouds and the chance for light rain and gusty winds Saturday night, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kalina.

Saturday’s 20 percent chance of thunderstorms is not likely to bring much moisture, but that changes Sunday.

Heavy rain, hail and lightning are headed to the Denver area Sunday afternoon, with the most severe weather expected for south and east of the city.

Despite the “cold front,” Sunday’s high is a predicted 90 degrees.
