A documentary about Denver’s growing drag-queen scene, which has produced nationally touring headliners like Nina Flowers, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” reality-TV stars, and a production company, seems like a good (and overdue) idea on its own.
But it gets even better when you picture Keith Garcia in the director’s chair. The veteran programmer for Denver Film Society and Alamo Drafthouse in Littleton has the knowledge, connections and passion to make it something akin to “Rolling Papers,” a buzzy documentary that looks at legal marijuana through the eyes of The Denver Post’s Cannabist website.
If that sounds self-serving, allow me to expand the comparison: “Rolling Papers” takes an ostensibly local angle on a formerly niche subject and delves deep enough to show that it’s got national relevance. Amid the new gold rush of legal weed, The Cannabist is doing something genuinely interesting, different and risk-taking. This innovative work has the potential to reverberate elsewhere — though it’s an interesting and self-contained story on its own.
The same can be said of Garcia’s project, currently titled “The Heels Have Eyes.” The “dragumentary,” which Garcia started six years ago, is in its , where would-be supporters have until Thursday, Aug. 27 to help get these “Heels” on their feet.
Garcia is shooting for $20,000 to get the documentary finished, and so far he’s raised about $13,000 of that. Head over to the for more information, including his detailed pitch, why he’s right for the job and some background on Denver’s nationally acclaimed but locally underappreciated drag scene.
