The Jefferson County School Board voted Thursday to ratify a 10-month agreement with the Jefferson County Education Association.

In an evening study session the board accepted the agreement — which was on Wednesday — by a 5-0 vote, according to a Jefferson County Education Association news release.

The agreement was reached after five months and more than 150 hours of negotiation.

“We began this process focused on the quality of our classrooms. We listened to our community, the parents, and the teachers and we stepped forward and stood up for our students. A short term agreement means that students will be losing more high quality, experienced educators to other districts,” said John Ford, Jefferson County Education Association President.

” It means the district will be spending tens of thousands of dollars repeating this process in just a few months. Those are dollars that are better spent in the classroom.”

Many students, parents and teachers attended the meeting, although public comment was not allowed.

The new aggreement, which requires a full-time teacher librarian in buildings with more than 400 students, among , expires on June 30, 2016.
