Judge Carlos Samour sits on the bench during the sentencing phase of James Holmes’ trial, Aug. 25, at Arapahoe County District Court in Centennial. Victims and their families were given the opportunity to speak about the shooting and its effects on their lives. Holmes was convicted Aug. 7 of murdering 12 people when he opened fire on a crowded movie theater in 2012. (RJ Sangosti, The Denver Post)
Not all events should be measured by cost alone. The Aurora theater trial’s worth is measured in pride for American justice system. Having the evidence publicly displayed, listening to the victims and seeing an unbelievably competent judge during this trial highlights all that makes the system work.
Even if District Attorney George Brauchler and his team did not get the requested death penalty, the time, effort and showcased excellence were well worth any cost.
