When asked to discuss it, he said he was kind of busy handling the “glamour” aspects of being a coach. There was to be a junior high scrimmage as well as another for his team, the 8-man West Grand Mustangs of Kremmling, and he was also attempting to prepare the field.

“I’m trying to find the stakes, and there’s paint all over my hands,” Brown said.
The coach is sitting at 298 victories — against 121 losses — and his Mustangs figure to be better than the 4-5 they were in 2014. They have a chance to make Brown just the third in-state coach to reach 300. Pat Panek has the record at 306.
“We have a big freshman class and 33 kids out, the most we’ve had since playing 8-man,” he said.
West Grand will open its season Saturday at Justice in Boulder, then host Nederland on Sept. 11.
Yes, Brown said he’ll mark the historic victory, but chest-thumping has never been the 62-year-old’s thing. It also would interfere with his dry sense of humor.

“We’re having a good time, and we’re still undefeated,” he said. “I’ll keep doing this, if they let me. I’ve got to have something to do. As long as I still love going to practice …”
