HIGHLANDS RANCH — For all of Pomona’s storied past that includes winning, black-and-blue play and remaining relevant among Colorado’s big boys for decades, Friday night’s effort surely will occupy a lofty perch next to most of it, even if it was an opener.
“Oh, it’s up there!” Panthers coach Jay Madden said.
The Panthers, ranked No. 3 in The Associated Press Class 5A media poll, went into crowded Valor Christian and handled the top-ranked Eagles 28-14 in a 5A nonleague game on a brilliant September evening.
If you’re into Pomona (1-0), it was glorious. Rugged line play and speed and athleticism at skill positions proved too much for Valor Christian (1-1), last season’s state runner-up. The Eagles downed the Panthers twice a year ago, including 56-34 in the state quarterfinals.
But Cameron Gonzales, a junior two-way back who did not miss a snap from scrimmage Thursday, and sturdy sophomore Max Borghi were diminutive stars and major differences.
“You can’t come in expecting to lose; you have to come in expecting to win,” said a tired Gonzales, who ran for three touchdowns and sealed the victory in the final minute with an interception in the end zone.
Gonzales ran 20 times for 86 yards overall and the three scores. Max Borghi, who frequently set up his teammate with big runs, added 97 yards on just 10 carries. He also had a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that answered Valor’s first score. “They just made some incredible plays,” Madden said.
Up front, junior tackle Jake Moretti was among Pomona’s leaders. On defense, Mark Bobian and Brandon Micale were at the front of assorted charges.
Valor Christian outgained the Panthers 328-209 in total yards, but junior quarterback Dylan McCaffrey was pressured all game. Valor was guilty of multiple mistakes and the Eagles never really were able to get behind the Panthers’ defense or run away from it.
