FORT COLLINS — Colorado State coach Mike Bobo Monday indicated that the injury that tight end Kivon Cartwright suffered against Savannah State Saturday isn’t believed to be serious.
“We’re optimistic about Kivon,” Bobo said. “I’ll know later in the week and y’all probably will be able to see, when you see him out there, if he’s running around. But I’m optimistic about everyone on the team. We came out relatively healthy. There’s always bumps and bruises. They’re always a little bit worse on Sunday and on Monday they get a little better and Tuesday get a little bit better.
“People are going to be a little bit sore. . . Kivon’s was just a weird deal how he got tackled. But we feel everything’s going to be fine. There’s definitely not major stuff.”
Cartwright had three receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown in the opener before he was injured in the second quarter when tackled. He was walking slowly and haltingly when escorted to the dressing room.
The senior from Pueblo was granted a medical hardship sixth season of eligibility in March after playing only in the opener against Colorado in 2014. After that, his troublesome ankle required additional surgery.
CSU also got word Monday that quarterback Nick Stevens, who was 20-28 for 289 yards and five touchdowns Saturday, was named the Mountain West offensive player of the week. The redshirt sophomore from Murrieta, Calif., played until early in the third quarter because of the lopsided nature of the game, and he will receive a much more stern test — as will his team — Saturday against Minnesota at Hughes Stadium.
“It’s a big week this week,” Bobo said. “We have a good opponent, a quality opponent. I think everybody in the nation saw them play the No. 2 team in the nation, TCU, and play them very well and have a chance to win the ballgame in the fourth quarter.”
