GREENWOOD VILLAGE — On the road to defending its Class 5A football championship, Cherry Creek took a hit last week.

Senior running back J.C. Chery experienced an injury in the fourth quarter of last Friday’s 17-3 nonleague victory at home at Stutler Bowl against Regis Jesuit. Chery will have season-ending ankle surgery.

A transfer from Missouri — he was at Cherokee Trail as a freshman and his father is in the Air Force — Chery has been productive for the Bruins, who are off to a 2-0 start. He led the team with 30 carries, 179 yards and two touchdowns.

Cherry Creek, now top-ranked in the , will be at No. 2 Pomona on Friday, 7 p.m., at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.
