A respected central Texas doctor was killed Thursday in southern Colorado when he fell while climbing the Crestone Needle in Custer County. Dr. Matt Davis fell on a technical route that leads up to a 14,203-foot summit, the county sheriff’s office said.

Authorities said Davis had ties in the Colorado town of Westcliffe, but they did not elaborate. The sheriff’s office said it took two days to extricate Davis’ body because of steep and rocky conditions where he fell.

Davis was a trauma director who specialized in emergency surgery and surgical critical care. Davis cared for victims of the Fort Hood shootings both in 2009 and in 2014.
