Stephen Colbert has spent the last nine months plotting his return to television. The political pundit from Comedy Central has retired briefly from our TV while preparing to take over David Letterman’s iconic spot on CBS.

Now, the proud son of South Carolina has staked his claim as the new face of late night television for CBS atop the Ed Sullivan Theater’s marquee. Tuesday night marked the return of the snarky host with no signs of rust. “Truthiness” was in full swing and the zip on his fast ball wasn’t lost with the banter with presidential nominee Gov. Jeb Bush.

“Late Show’s” new band leader, Jon Batiste, led the inaugural musical piece with a little help from many of his friends. Leading the pack was Mavis Staples with a commanding cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Everyday People.” Legendary guitarist, Derek Trucks, lent a hand with the likes of talented trumpet player, Beirut, as well as Buddy Guy, Ben Folds, Aloe Blacc and Alabama Shakes’ ringleader, Brittany Howard.

We look forward to many more nights of eating Oreos and Sabra Hummus with Stephen Colbert and Jon Batiste. The rest of the week looks stacked with a lineup including Kendrick Lamar and Toby Keith on the docket.
