VAIL, Colo. (AP) — A route between Vail and Denver is getting an extra lane that people can pay to use during peak hours.
The Vail Daily reports (http://bit.ly/1JX0aga) the toll lane could be open along 13 miles of Interstate 70 near Empire as soon as December.
I-70 Coalition Director Margaret Bowes says this is the most significant capacity expansion in years on a road that opened in 1979.
The lane will be open during weekends and holidays. Tolls will range from about $3 to $30 per car depending on traffic.
Department of transportation spokeswoman Amy Ford says the $30 toll will probably be rare.
She said fluctuating tolls will limit drivers in the lane, keep traffic moving and help repay the bonds used to fund the expansion.
