The White House’s pledge to accept at least 10,000 refugees from Syria — a sixfold increase over the number admitted this year — is a welcome gesture even though the number is still small considering the massive problem.

An estimated 4 million Syrian refugees have fled since the civil war began in 2011.

Activists had called for the U.S. to let in as many as 100,000 refugees, but that would have been a logistical nightmare the country is not yet prepared to handle.

Ten thousand refugees may not appreciably ease the burden on countries in Europe and the Middle East, but the gesture at least shows the U.S. is playing a role in helping with what T he worst migrant crisis since World War II.

Meanwhile, it’s important the U.S. continue to donate generously to the international agencies dealing with the waves of refugees.
