Re: “Controversial, prize-winning “The Flick” opening at Curious Theatre,” Sept. 4 Life & Culture story.

John Jurcheck and Laura Jo Trexl appear in Curious Theatre’s “The Flick,” a play about workers at a movie theater who sweep popcorn, mop sticky soda and talk about their lives between showings. The three-hour play is marked by long silences. (Provided by Curious Theatre)

My husband and I wish we had read Joanne Ostrow’s article regarding “The Flick” before we went to see the preview performance of the play. All we read was The New York Times’ “rave” review included in the Curious Theatre’s mailer, which said the play was “hilarious.” Ostrow’s “glacial” was a much better description for the three-hour performance. I heard several comments during intermission, none of them positive, and the rate of attrition after intermission was obvious. The people in front of us, next to us and behind us did not return after intermission.

We have seen some wonderful productions at the Curious Theatre. This wasn’t one of them. “The Flick’s” director, Chip Walton, said that he would rather that his audiences be polarized than bored. We hope there will be enough of an audience each night to make that decision.
